Issues on Copyright

Here's an interesting article on copyright infringement. Keep in mind this is a professional photography website that offers a different point of view.

  1. I think when you put an image on the internet at make it avalible for people to use you should expect it to be used, people are just using the resources they are given

  2. i find it strange how copy and pasteing an image of the internet is so harmful. i mean yes its hard if your the artist and someone calls your piece their own, but if like you are using it for a project...who gives? you would think that by stealing a picture to use would cause someone to go to court/ jail for pirating a single picture that someone risked by placing it on the internet. quite honestly i am not sure how i stand on this issue because like i said it sucks if you are the artist and someone steals you masterpiece and calls it their own. but then again we all use other peoples work for our inspiration or used for other important things. so i really am not sure where i stand.

  3. i think that if you decide to use an image of the internet you should be able to use it for personel use but not for commercial. you should expect that poeple are going to use the image if its on hte internet.

  4. People should really realize what they're putting up. I think its fair game if they put it up on a free site. If they don't want it to be used or misused don't put it on a free site.

  5. I think when the artest puts a picture on the internet they should realize people can take them and if they don't want them to take them the should find a way to make the photo unusable.

  6. i think its stupid. because if you don't want people to take your pictures then only show people you want too. or else don't flip out if someone takes your picture!

  7. Seems rather frustrating. The only way of stopping it would be to somehow store a line of code within the image itself that contains the orignal author and copyright information. Even then, someone would find a way to bypass such measures and tamper with the code. It is rather unfortunate for the photographers, but there is no way of stopping it. When you upload a photo to the internet you should realize that there are unfortunately many people who do not care about copyright and will take your pictures without a second thought.

  8. I find it kinda funny how the guy says photogaphers dont need to worry about their pictures being stolen off the internet..i think its a joke because you should worry. For our last project i just went on the internet and took pictures and photoshopped the writing over it. So i think if you dont want your image on the internet or people to steal it...dont put it up.

  9. I think that the artists that do put their pictures on the internet they should realize that there are going to be people that are going to take them and use them but I do see where they are coming from

  10. I agree with him when he says that photographers increase the risk of having their pictures stolen whe they post thenm on the internet without the copyright symbol

  11. I think when a photographer puts an image on the internet, he takes the risk of copyright infringement. When photos are used for personal use in regards to commecial use, I don't believe its a big deal. I think it's a smart idea that a website like Flickr can give the option to photographer whether or not they want the image shared to the public.

  12. What's interesting is that this not only applies to the world of photography but any artist in general. I mean you wouldn't steal a c.d. or a movie right from the store but people using illegal downloading sites are doing the same thing. There are plenty of musicians out there who feel the same way and their art is not appreciated because it's so accessable. Photographers have an easy way to simply put a copyright symbol over their pictures as a way to discourage illegal users whereas musicians are having a harder time. The artists should use the few resources they have...

  13. It seems like a photographer serious about his or her work would be using a different venue to display their work, one that would not threaten their credibility. I get how the internet is a fast and super efficient means of spreading your artwork, but it just seems like a person whos career is in photography might initially use a more reliable method.

  14. i think that if a person puts an image on the internet or to a magazine they better expect it to be used and posted all over the internet. if they dont then there stupid! everyone knows how the internet works! you find a picture, you like it, you save it and do something with it, or use it in a project!

  15. I think that you cannot do anything about someone "stealing" a copyrighted photo and posting it on another site on the internet.
And then it goes from web page to web page and you dont know that it was a copyrighted photo.
So for professional photographers it is really frustrating when your photo is used for other purposes. They cannot delete or tell other people to delete all of them that fast.

  16. They dont say this in the article , but there are different copyright rules for educational purposes like our class, so many laws are not going to affect us. There are ways to put pictures online where they are unable to be copied. This may be a more difficult task, but if you really dont want anyone to take your pictures then that is what you have to do. Otherwise your pictures are expected to be copied. I understand that the laws are somewhat lenient, but there are things the artist can do to sop the pictures to be copied in the first place. They could make laws better and with more enforcement, but this is just a waste of time and money for our government. There are other ways that artists can display there work if they are absolutely dependent on the internet then maybe they arent a true artist in the first place.

  17. i kinda agree with him. but the artist should know that if there going to put there pictures online then there is a pretty good chance that they are going to be taken and used. i dont know howelse to put it if they don't want that to happen then don't but them online!!

  18. i think that it isn't really worth it to try to prosecute people that use copyrighted pictures unless they are profiting from someone elses work. It is very hard to prove whose picture it is and to stop people from using it. Technology could be researched to stop people from using copyrighted pictures.

  19. i think that if you use to picture for personal use it should be fine. but if you were to post it on the internet that is considered copyright. an the photographer should know that if they out there picture on the internet they have a slight chance that someone is going to take there photo and use it for their own purpose. the photographer should know that if they didn't want someone to take their photo then they shouldn't of put them online

  20. once a picture is on the internet, it can be used by anyone in the world. if you didn't want expect everyone to have a chance to get a hold of the picture, then you should not have posted it in the first place. the internet is open and widely used.

  21. i believe that if you dont want your picture to be used by others then dont post it on the internet for people to use. When its on the web its fair game. if you dont want it on the internet where other people can use it then dont put it on the internet.

  22. i think that if someone puts their picture on the internet, they should be prepared to let it be used, not stolen. if they dont want anyone using it, they shouldnt put it up on the internet. also they could just put a copyright symbol on it.

  23. I think that kind of "stealing" would be if someone wants to see a movie and doens't pay for watching it. I don't know why it is such a big problem for people if they really want to have that specific picture why they just can't buy it or take one on their that looks the same.
If I would be an artist I don't want to have my pictures all over the web so that everyone could use them. But I also understand the people who want to use their photos!

  24. I think if someone puts their picture on the internet they should expect it to be used in other things. Especially if they post it on a search engine, where people will obviously be searching for that specific thing

  25. If something is put on the internet and used without consent or taken for free it is stealing, same rules apply for music and videos, so why would it not be enforced with images?

  27. I think that when someone creates something, they should be paid for it. However they need to realize that what they have created it going to be accessable by the general public, and that there are people who are going to be able to access it. I don't think it should be a real big deal unless someone is making a profit off of something that somebody else created.

  28. i think you should be able to use the photo for little things and not have to pay to just use a copy of someone elses work. if you were gonna make a lot of them and possibly sell them off as your own thats not right but u shouldnt need to pay for the uses of someones art work. they made it for people to look and and possibly use as an example for something maybe in a powerpoint or so. so there should be no reason why you should have to pay for it. but thats just my opinion.

  29. I believe that people who post their pictures on the internet and then expect people not to take them are dreaming. The majority of the people using the posted pictures aren't using them to make money, most of them are just using them for a school or personal project. I just really don't see the big deal in it if you aren't using them to make money.

  30. I think that it is not a big deal if someone is using it for little things. But i think that if someone is using it to make mouney off it they should haf to pay the person that they are tacking it from.

  31. I understand the frustration of photographers who take great pictures then they are put out on the internet for everybody to use for their own purposes and for free. But at the same time, if you don't want your work to be on the internet you shouldn't become a photographer. It's obvious people like your work or they wouldn't use it. So in a way it should be flattering to the photographers, that so many people like their pictures, but at the same time I understand their frustration. If they wanted to change that, put a copyright on it if is posted on the internet.

  32. Well it's a risk posting images to the internet, knowing millions of people will have access to them. So how could you possibly not expect people to use them. & most people aren't using the images for commercial use, but for projects or something...so why pay for it? If someone were making money from your pictures...that's another story.

  33. I agree that people shouldn't be able to use a picture unless they can buy it for like 99 cents or something. If you don't agree with me, think about it this way: "music sharing web sites" and "downloading illegal songs" are illegal, why not pictures?

    ***On a side note***

I had no idea that there was a book that kept track of famous quotes. The book mentioned was "Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations". I can understand it's exsitence: you can know for sure where that "familar" quotation actually came from. I applaud the author(s) of this book.(lol)

  34. I think that using a picture from the internet should be like using information from the internet. If you are writing a paper about something and use the internet, you have to site the source you got it from to give it credit. I think it should be the same for pictures, if you use a picture from the internet it should be sited by the photographer. I think that people could get sued for using images from the internet without siting them only if it is used publically... but for personal use when noone will ever see it, it shouldn't be a massive deal. Also, if photographers don't have their name posted to their pictures they have up on the internet, it is their fault for not having that information up and if someone uses their photo they shouldn't be punished.
